CAUVERY COLLEGE FOR WOMEN

HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

In Tiruchirapalli Town, the geographic center of Tamilnadu State, there were only two Women's Colleges for Women for  over three decades. On account of (i) the increase in the percentage of women seeking higher education, (ii) the demand for higher education for girls from rural areas and (iii) the limited number of seats in the one or two Women's Colleges in the neighbouring districts of Salem and Thanjavur, there was a heavy rush for admission in the two Women's Colleges of Tirchy.

To fulfil the long-felt need for another institution of higher education for girls in the city, Reddy Educational Trust approached the Government of Tamilnadu with a request to start a Women's College in Tirchy in order to impart education for Women of all communities and religions. The TamilNadu Government was pleased to accord permission to the Trust to start an Arts and Science College for Women as a self financing institution as per G.O 1298 dated 1st October, 1984. Accordingly on 17th October ,1984,  a day significant in many respect Cauvery College for Women , is established by the Reddy Educational Trust and administered by the College Council.

An institution is not just a social arrangement with certain form and function. In order to survive, it must also have a certain legitimacy and meaning for its members, such that they are willing to put its demand above their individual interest. In this regard, the College is blessed with  its  48 members who are enlightened and interested citizens of Trichy District and who have philanthropic outlook with noble and progressive ideals.   Cauvery College for Women is a self-financing institution and as such does not receive any financial aid from the Governement for its recurring and non-recurring expenditure. It is maintained by the munificence of Reddy Educational Trust, and also by the generosity of like-minded people.

Cauvery College for women aims at  Excellence in Education’ the  portals are open  to many first generation learners and students from rural areas to varied branches of study. The primary aim of this prestigious institution is to lay more emphasis not only to develop the technical skills of our students, but also to nuture professional competency, self-Confidence, managerial abilities and entrepreneurial development. To meet the needs of the present day, job oriented, socially relevant and innovative courses like Social Work, Information Technology, Computer Science, Physics, Microbiology, Mathematics, Business Administration, Commerce & Food Service Management & Dietetics have been introduced . These courses enable the students to develop their personal skills for a prospective, meaningful employment.

Another feature has been added to its cap when the college has been included in the list of colleges prepared under Section 2(f) & 12(B) of the UGC Act 1956. The College is awaiting a greater recognition from the NAAC accreditation which has been made mandatory. The result of  the NAAC Peer team visit between Feb 5th and Feb 7th  which is expected to be published shortly will certainly be a reward for our priceless perseverance.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

LAB DETAILS

Introduction :

It is worth mentioning that the physics Laboratory reminds us that we are entering into the domain scientific learning. There are three well equipped and furnished laboratories functioning successfully in the department and they are UG Lab, Pg Lab and Computer Lab. The Pg Physics Laboratory is well equipped with very good infra-structure which motivates the students learning and Research.

Maintenance of Lab Equipments:

The Lab equipments are maintained under two categories viz., consumable and non- consumable things. The registers for these two are maintained separately and the data are updated for the regular usage of students.

Maintenance of registers:

The following registers are maintained in the Lab for easy accession of Lab equipments

(i)                   Stock register for maintaining and updating the data regarding the number of equipments and their availability.

(ii)                 Accession register for maintaining the bills and the amount that has been settled down by the department.

(iii)                Issue register to provide the equipments availed to the students during the regular practical classes.

(iv)               Breakage register to picture out the Breakage of equipments thereby the availability number can be consecutively increased.

(v)                 Service register to provide the information regarding the equipments that has been serviced regularly or during the ill-function.

(vi)               Quotation register in which all the  quotations offered by the companies are entered for future comparison.

Ordering of Lab Equipments:

Equipments are  purchased by comparing and accessing the quotations received from various companies and orders are placed on the basis of the following criteria

(a)     Best quality

(b)     Low cost

(c)     Required condition

Also  the Quotation comparison register is maintained thereby all the above conditions are satisfied while ordering the standard equipments from the reputed companies.

Servicing of Lab Equipments:

Minor repairs are set right by technical Assistant. Major repairs are rectified by sending the apparatus to the corresponding scientific companies.

Maintenance of Lab:

Both the PG and UG labs are maintained well under the control of three lab assistants and a technical assistant. The details regarding the provisions of Lab equipments and the servicing of minor repairs are carried out by them.

Highlights of Lab:

·          Each Student is provided with individual apparatus during their regular practical classes itself.

·          Practical are being conducted by framing cycles  of experiments during the regular practical classes.

·          Students are provided with stationary during model and university practical examinations.

·          The lab equipments are sufficient enough such that other departments like computer science use the facilities provided by the Lab for their hardware Lab purposes.

·          Seven Systems with a Server and a printer are provided separately for the students in the Computer Lab.
