COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCE FOR WOMEN

HISTORY

With the noble aim of upliftment of Women through education in view, the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Charitable and Educational Trust has established an institution of higher learning at Perambalur Town in the name of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women.

            The Chairman of the trust and the founder of the College Shri.A.Srinivasan is a renowned visionary of this territory.  His dream of erasing the illiteracy among Women of the traditionally backward district of Perambalur is fulfilled on 14th November 1996 when the college started functioning.

            The College offered four U.G courses viz, B.Com., B.Sc., Mathematics, B.Sc., Chemistry and B.Sc., Physics in 1996.  In its maiden year the College had 45 students on its roll with Six Teaching and one Non-teaching Staff member.  The College was temporarily housed in the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Matriculation Higher Secondary School building run by the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Charitable and Educational Trust.

            In the second year three new courses B.Sc.,Computer Science, B.Sc., Biochemistry, B.Sc., Microbiology were introduced.

            The College was shifted to the new building at its permanent site spread over 100 acres of land in July 1998.  B.B.A in liew of B.Sc., Physics was introduced.  Further additional sections in B.Com., & B.Sc Computer Science were started.

            In the fourth year the College has blossomed into a post graduate institution with the introduction of M.Sc., Microbiology and MCA with AICTE approved.  At UG level BCA was introduced.

            M.S.IT, M.Sc.,Computer Science, M.Sc., Biotechnology and M.Sc., Microbiology evening section were started in the year 2000-2001.  B.Sc., IT and B.C.A additional section were introduced in the same year.

            M.Sc., Biotechnology was introduced in 2001-2002.  College started B.Litt.,(Tamil) and B.Sc.,Biotechnology at UG level and M.Com., M.Sc.,Chemistry, M.Sc.,Bioinformatics, as well as M.Sc., Biotechnology additional section in 2002-2003.

            Three new courses viz M.Sc., Mathematics, M.Sc., Physics, M.Sc., Electronics and also additional section in M.Sc., Chemistry were introduced in 2003-2004.  At UG level B.Sc., Physics was started in the same year.

            The College offers totally Twelve UG courses and Eleven PG courses at present.

            The College Building is dexterously designed Four-Storeyed structure with spacious and well-ventilated classrooms.  All our laboratories are designed by experts and are supplied with state-of-Art infrastructure facilities.  Internet facility with ISDN line is available for use round the Clock. 

            The College campus with its ornamental gardens, lush green lawns and artificial fountain is strikingly beautiful.

            College Library is provided with all the necessary facilities.  It has on its stocks 8741 books.  The total number of journals and magazines subscribed is 58.  Library is air conditioned and fully automated.  It functions from 8.00 AM to 8.00 PM daily.  Open access system is followed.  Xerox facility is also available.

            The landmark achievement of the College is the ISO 9001-2000 Certification in December 2003.

            The student strength has increased from 45 in the year of inception is 2250 in 2003-2004.  The staff strength increased from 11 to 97, which included 2 librarians and 1 Physical Director.  Increase in the Non-teaching staff is from 1-25 during the same period.

ASSOCIATIONS

            English Association conducts Bridge course for the 1st year UG students at the beginning of every academic year.  Guest lectures, Seminars and workshops have been regularly arranged by the Departmental Associations.

            The Department of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics conducted state level seminar entitled “Bio-Galaxy” from 19th to 21st February 2004 jointly.

            The Department of Computer Science has organized a two-day State Level  Seminar on “Recent Trends in Information Technology” on 29th and 30th September 2003.

            The Department of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics have jointly organized a three-day workshop in “Genomics and Proteomics” from 23rd - 25th February 2004.

EXTRACURICULAR ACTIVITIES

            First NSS Unit was installed in February 1998.  Second and third Units were added in the year 2000 and 2003 respectively.  Two out of three NSS programme officers are trained persons.  NSS special camps have been conducted for 10 days in selected Villages every year.

            Rotaract club was installed for the first time in the year 2000 sponsored by the Rotary club of Perambular.  There are 100 Volunteers under the guidance of 2 staff co-ordinators.  Rotaractors have been taking part actively in pulse polio programme, Blood donation and AIDS awareness programme etc.

            YRC Wing was inaugurated in Oct 2003.  One hundred students have registered their names as Volunteers under the guidance of one YRC Programme Officer.  This year our College YRC Wing helped the Panjayat Union of Perambular in the construction of Rain Water harvesting devices for the houses in the village Aranarai.

SPORTS AND GAMES

            Special attention is given to Physical Education.  Our College has very attractive courts for Basketball, Ball Badminton, Shuttle cock and Tennicoit.  Regular couching is given to our players in the evening.

HOSTEL

Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College hostel started functioning in November 1996 with 20 inmates. The hostel functioned in the college building till June 2001.  A new      4-storyed hostel building with all the necessary facilities was constructed in 2001-2002 adjacent to college with in the same campus.  The hostel strength increased steadily and it is 1120 in 2003-2004. There are 4 wardens in the hostel at present.

            A mineral water plant is installed inside the campus to ensure the supply of protected drinking water to the students of college and hostel.

Students and staff are provided with transport facilities to various places in and around Perambalur.

            The College is sure to gain prominence in the future by the dedication of the staff committed involvement of the Management and support of the authorities of Bharathidasan University.
