  • 1. Enumeration of the marine cyanobacterial wealth of India through a complete survey of the coasts. 

  • 2. Establishment of a marine cyanobacterial germplasm to serve as a gene bank for the present and posterity.

  • 3. Basic and applied research in several aspects including: Taxonomy, finger printing, salt and desiccation stress, plasmid profile, cyanophages, mass cultivation and harvesting techniques, hydrogen production, enzyme production, pigment production, novel drugs, other intra and extra cellular products, bioflocculants, siderophores, biofertilizers and effluent treatment using degradative enzymes.

  • 4. Provision of instrumentation and analytical services to scientists and industries at nominal charges.

  • 5. Development of trained human resource through annual training workshops.

  • 6. Transfer of low cost mass cultivation technologies to the rural folk of coastal area, enabling them to mass produce useful marine cyanobacteria.

  • 7. Guidance and provision of infrastructure for the students and scientists on short-term projects.

  • 8. Inventory and dissemination of knowledge on cyanobacterial research through national and international conferences.
