Information Technology Infrastructure Services

UIC designs, provides, and manages most of the computing infrastructure for the University. We offer a broad spectrum of services to make the faculty, staff and students of the University to make effective use of this infrastructure. A number of services related to server management and monitoring, campus network management and data center operations are essential to the day-to-day operations of the University.

Campus Network

The UIC has a wide range of responsibilities, from providing the campus network to ensuring critical day-to-day functionalities to strategic planning for IT. Almost all the buildings are interconnected through campus wide network (Optical Fiber Cable backbone) to extend the internet connectivity. Wireless internet connectivity using Wi-Fi technology is also established as a secondary backbone. The University has 150 Mbps bandwidth internet connectivity for the main campus and 8 Mbps for the Khajamalai campus. Any-time & Any-where computing is supported throughout all areas of the BDU campuses by a proliferation of network jacks.

The networking services ensures that faculty, students, research scholars, administrative staff and special guests can easily connect systems to the campus network with automatic network configuration (DHCP).

Server Administration

The University Informatics Centre runs it own Web Server, Mail Server, DNS / DHCP Server, Virtual Education Server, several sub-domain Servers and High Performance Computing Servers.

Data Center Operations

The University Informatics Centre has a 4 TB capacity IP SAN storage for Centralised data storage. Manuscript gallery, Knowledge Repository and Multimedia Portal services aren hosted in the IP SAN.

Network Management

Bharathidasan University has a large and complex network consisting of high configuration network devices servicing over 1400 data points in nearly 30 buildings on 2 campuses. In addition to a fixed data network UIC also provides a wireless service for staff, students and authorized visitors. The wireless service currently provides access for more than 500 concurrent users every day. The university relies heavily on the entire network for the delivery of academic and administrative services. Bharathidasan University's enterprise network is a state-of-the-art, Ethernet network (Optical Fiber Cable backbone) which consists of a scalable, resilient high data throughput core backbone and resilient connectivity at speeds of up to 10 gigabit/s for end-user connectivity. The network includes enhanced security to conform with the University's network security policy, while Quality of Service (QoS) features are implemented to ensure high network performance. The network was designed with an emphasis on availability and maintainability via multi-paths and dual active/standby hardware pairs to minimize the number of single-point-failure items.
