Profile

The Department of Social Work has been established in Bharathidasan University in the year 1995 with the prime motto of “Inducting Humanism, Injecting Moral Values, Imbibing the Art of Professionalism in Social Work in the Young Minds and also Enrouting the Academia for the Welfare of the Society”. This is the only University department in Tamil Nadu offering an unique Masters Degree in Social Work which is fully packed-up with class and field oriented concepts in Community Development (Rural, Urban and Tribal) and Human Resource Development. The course is becoming increasingly popular owing to its further professional in nature and witnesses excellent placement record. The Department of Social Work is also engaged in M.Phil., and doctoral Research Programme (both full-time and part-time) in the above fields. The department is known for its multivariate Extension Programmes in the above fields. Within the short span of nearly five years the department conducted various National Conferences/Workshops/Seminars and Extension Activities. In addition the department is also undertakes Career Guidance and Counselling for the students and the citizens of various cross sections of the Society besides Consultancy Service for the National and International agencies. The department also taking up number of sponsored research projects in collaboration with various Centres and Schools. Thus, acting as a Nerve Centre in taking the academia to the Society.

Extension Activities

Community Programmes: Periodical Extension Activities were organised in Slums, Villages and Tribal Areas on Alcoholism and Drug Addition, Community Mental Health, Aids Awareness, Prevention of Handicappedness, Issues on Children, Women, Aged & Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes, Family Counselling, Preventation of Suicides, Environmental Sanitation, School Enrolment Drive, Child Labour, etc.

Rural/Tribal Camps: Periodical camps were orgainsed in Tribal Areas of Pachamalai Hills, Tiruchirappalli District.

Awareness Creation Rallies: Organised Rallies on the subjects like Child Labour, Atrocities on Women, National Integration etc.

Concurrent Field work & Block Placements: Deployment of Students in various Governmental, Non Governmental organisations, Villages, Tribal Hamlets and Urban Slums thrise a week in all the semesters for field work practice and one month block placement.

Students Career Guidance and Counselling Cell: Placement of students in various agencies for employment, Guidance for Higher Education and Special Coaching for State Civil Examinations, UGC/NET and other Competitive examinations for Social work students.

Special Camps: Organised a Ten day NSS Special Rural Camp at Nanjur Village near Keeranur between 12-21 January 2002.
