Profile

Carved out of the then composite school of Life Sciences, the Department of Animal Science was established in 1993. All along its existence, the Department has been bubbling with activity in all aspects of academic pursuits, viz., research, teaching and extension. All the faculty members guide students towards Ph.D. Degree in the frontier areas of Animal Science, viz. Reproductive Technology, Male Contraception, Cancer Biology, Phytotherapy, Aquaculture, Mycopathology, Toxicology, Stress Physiology, Environmental Management, Pheromone Technology, etc., attracting fund for research from UGC, DST, ICMR, CSIR, DoD, ICAR,DBT,etc. Past M.Sc. students and Ph.D. scholars occupy senior level /post-doctoral /pre-doctoral positions in research /teaching Institutes /Universities in India and abroad.

The department has recently become a “DST-FIST Sponsored Department”.

Facilities

 

The Department has sophisticated instrumentation facility for animal cell and tissue culture, immunological analysis, microscopy and image analysis, molecular biology, biochemistry, ecological energetics, etc. The Department also has arrangement with renowned institutions like Christian Medical College, Vellore, Veterinary University Centre at Namakkal, USIC at Madurai Kamaraj University, Dr. ALM Post-graduvate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences,Chennai, Indian Institute of Sciences,  Bangalore, etc., so as to avail of their instrumentation facility and technical know how. The Department has a sophisticated Animal House, which is the Central Animal Facility the entire University, approved by the CPCSEA, Govt. of India.

 

Courses

During the earlier years, the role of the Department in teaching was in connection with M.Sc. (5-year integrated) Course in Life Sciences. In addition to this course, a two-year M.Sc. Course in Zoology was run on experimental basis during 2000 – 2002. Currently the Department offers a two-year M.Sc. program in Animal Biotechnology and also participates in offering the five-year integrated M.Sc. Programmes in Life Sciences and Bio-Medical Sciences.

Consultancy

The faculty of the Department offer consultancy in Andrology, Histology and Ultrastructure, and Aquaculture Technology. Research collaboration with the Universities of Kentucky and Illinois. USA, and University of Liverpool, England, have come up in the recent years, which form reasonable recognition of this Department in the international scenario.
