Thermal and photochemical electron-transfer studies of chromium, cobalt and ruthenium-polymer and -surfactant complexes, Reactions of metal complexes in micelles and in micro-emulsions. Synthesis of some novel metal-surfactant/polymer complexes and their biological activities. Polymer-metal complex-DNA interactions, Surfactant-metal complex-DNA interactions. All these studies are being carried out making use of instruments like spectrophotometers, spectrofluorometers, laser-flash photolysis apparatus, nanosecond single-photon counting instruments for lifetime measurements, Gel-Chromatography etc. | |||
| In the above areas we have achieved the following: | ||||
| Our studies on steady and flash photolysis studies on the charge transfer photochemistry of many polymer anchored as well as surfactant-cobalt(III) amine complexes have cleared some uncertainties in the general mechanism of charge-transfer photoreduction of cobalt(III)-amine complexes. Flash photolysis studies on these complexes revealed the nature of the intermediate radicals through which we have identified the type of charge-transfer responsible for the photoreduction. | ||||
| We have measured the critical micelle concentration values (CMC) of these complexes by conductivity methods. The CMC values of all these surfactant complexes are almost 100 fold lower compared to those for the other well-known organic surfactants like sodium dodecylsulphate and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. These surfactant complexes have high anthelmintic properties. Also we have investigated the thermodynamics of micelle formation of surfactant-metal complexes. | ||||
| Emission and life-time quenching studies were done using the above mentioned metal surfactant complexes as quenchers and Ru(bpy)32+ or Ru(phen)32+ as the sesitizer in self micelles formed by the surfactant complexes using nanosecond laser flash photolysis instruments. | ||||
| Both inner-sphere and outer-sphere electron transfer reactions involving surfactant cobalt(III) and chromium(III) complexes in micelles, in cyclodextrin media and in DNA are being routinely studied. Photochemical studies are also being undertaken in these media. | ||||
| The interaction pattern of nucleic acids with our surfactant and polymer-metal complexes have been actively pursued. | ||||
|
Antimicrobial and antitumor properties of some of our surfactant and polymer-metal complexes are also being checked. |
