Profile
The Botany
Department was established by the University in 1977 in the Autonomous
Postgraduate Extension centre at Tiruchirapalli under the Leadership of
Prof. K.Periasamy.. The Department became part of Bharathidasan
University during 1981. Prof. Periasamy got retired and Prof.G.R.Rao
took charge as the head in 1987. The Department was shifted to the
Palkalaiperur campus about 15 K.M. from Tiruchirappalli town on
Pudukkottai road during 1987.
With a view to offer high quality Post Graduate programmes and to carry
out inter-disciplinary research in frontier areas, a School of Life
Sciences in the existing Botany Department was visualized in 1989 and
the same came into formal existence from 1993 with four Departments
viz., Plant Science, Animal Science, Microbiology and Biotechnology
carved out of the original Botany department. Prof. K.V.Krishanamurthy
got retired during 2006 from Plant Science Department and Prof. N.
Jayabalan took charge as Head of the Plant Science Department in July
2006.

Facilities
The department has sophisticated instrumentation facility for Plant Tissue culture, microscopy and microphotography, molecular biology, Biochemistry, Plant physiology and plant conservation. Environmental plant growth chamber, Gel documentation apparatus, PCR machine and uv visible spectrophotometer are available.
