National Service Scheme (NSS)

The idea of involving student youth in the task of national service dates back to the times of Mahatma Gandhi who tried to impress upon the student audience that they should always keep before them their supreme responsibility to prepare themselves for final dedication in the service of community. He advised them to form a living contact and exhorted them to do something positive so that the life of village might be raised to higher material and moral levels. So the NSS scheme was launched in Gandhiji centenary year in 1969 70 on 24th September.

The scheme has been so effective due to the fact that it is low investment and high dividend scheme in which special emphasis has been given to NSS in the National Policy in the colleges and universities. In view of the special importance having been given to the fulfilling of its objectives to the satisfaction of one and all, the scheme is not only useful but essential for the full development of the personality of students particularly in the context of the campus situations in the county where besides purely academic work other opportunities for personality development are scarce except NCC and Sports etc.

Started initially in 37 universities involving 40,000 volunteers, the scheme has grown over the years and it is implemented today with an involvement of more than 2.7 million volunteers spread over in 208 universities, and 39 polytechnics and +2 systems. Founded in 1982 the same year as that of the founding of Bharathidasan University the National Service Scheme of Bharathidasan University instituted under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has been progressing from strength to strength. Its motto is “Education and Personality Development through Community Service”. Its logo consists of the image of the sun wheel of the Sun temple of Konark, Orissa, thus signifying the indefatigable intension of an ever- present readiness for service on the part of its Student Volunteers with the strength of about 27,900 in 279 units During these twenty six long years of its existence since its inception it has served as many as 270 villages of eight districts covered Bharathidasan University in a plurality of ways such as:

i. Field Work – Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation, Road laying, Reforestation and Re-greening

ii. Social Service – Rehabilitation of child labourers by repositioning them in the educational stream

iii. Awareness Cultural Programme

iv. Training for Self-employment and Self-entrepreneurship

v. Census taking of various kinds – literacy census, economic bracket census, domestic utilities census, live stock census, etc., as and when required by the Governmental agencies

vi. Guidance, Counseling and Confidential advice respectively to school and college drop-outs, all tense/traumatized students and crack-up student subjects, Social Harmony and inter-faith ecumenism, and above all National Integration.

To redress the grievances of numerous students who come from far and near an exclusive Students Counselling and Grievance Redressal Cell with touch screen facility has been introduced in January 2009. The students’ problems are redressed at the earliest mediated by the Cell.
