NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

Profile

The National Service Scheme (NSS) wing of the University, has involved 71 affiliated colleges along with the University campus, with a total strength of over 16,500 students in NSS. On the whole, there are over 160 NSS Units.

The regular activities of NSS include a number of programs like campus cleaning, tree plantation, blood and eye donations, creation of NSS park, AIDS Awareness, skill development, Women’s Rights, dowry menace, pre-marital counselling, abuse of alcohol and drugs, awareness of Civil Rights, Human Rights and consumer awareness.

The students also undertake cycle expedition to remote villages to highlight social evils like abuse of alcohol, untouchability and stress the need of iodised salt, polio vaccine immunization, small savings, adult literacy. They also visit hospitals, Blind schools, noon meal centres, rehabilitation centres and assist the local staff, by lending their services to white washing, teaching and handing over their collection of clothes and books.

In the special camps, the students stay for ten days and adopt the village, identify themselves with the locals and their problems.

The spontaneous response to Kargil war by the Bharathidasan NSS Volunteers is tremendous. Many students donated blood to help the soldiers. A rally was conducted to arouse the sprit of patriotism to the public. Funds were mobilised by door to door collection and the money was handed over to the District Collector. To remove the sufferings and agony of Orissa flood victims our volunteers collected a sum of Rs.1,50,000 and sent it to the administration as a part of their relief and rescue measure.

The NSS performance of the University has been consistently good receiving appreciation from all concerned. The details for the year 1999-2000 are given below:
