From molecules and cells to organisms and their environment, Life Sciences is an exciting area to study and is contributing to major advances related from human to environment in the aspects of health, medicine and food security. The School of Life Sciences has an excellent research profile which merely assessed for its reputed quality, supporting an exciting range of teaching programs. It encompasses 6 Departments of which Biotechnology is one field.
Biotechnology is one of the most dynamic and fast-moving divisions of modern life sciences. Carved out of the then composite School of Life Sciences, the Department of Biotechnology was established in 1993. Since then, the Department is actively involved in teaching, research, and consultancy. It embraces topics from basic biology to structural biology, from genomics to genetic conservation, from pathogenicity to toxicology, from gene regulation to human growth factors & cell signaling and from environmental biology to animal & plant physiology and stem cell to regenerative medicine.
Considering the wide openings and vast scope of Biotechnology in the international scientific community, recently in the academic year 2012 - 2013 the Dept. of Biotechnology was elevated to the level School of Biotechnology accommodating two Departments of which, Dept. of Industrial Biotechnology is one. The vision of the Department is to expand knowledge in Basic & Applied Science and Engineering & Technology. The Mission is to pursue career pathway in relevant Technology fields applicable to the Industries. We are proud to deliver outstanding postgraduate professional education like 2 year M.Sc. and 1 year M.Phil Industrial Biotechnology programs that offers exciting and varied career opportunities. We deliver excellent teaching and research across the broad span of modern Industrial Biotechnology. The academic programs are assisted by regular and guest faculties.
As an ambitious, research-driven Department we are continually improving the quality of our research activity and outputs, as a key part of our strategic plan. Partnerships amongst governments, the economic sector and research universities are growing exponentially, so that new knowledge becomes linked to develop goals.
Research in this department includes human, animal, plant, microbial, cell and molecular biology. Bioactive potentials, Immunomodulators, Molecular Biology, Immunodiagnostics, and Microbial Biotechnology are the areas in which research is going on in the Department.
The department has attracted nearly 1 Crore funding from various National and State funding agencies. Till date the faculties of the Department has produced about 9 Ph.D.'s, 40 M. Sc.'s and 15 M. Phil.'s. Most of our Ph.D.'s and M. Sc.'s are pursuing careers abroad. The faculties have published around 75 research papers and a dozen books to their credit. The faculty offers consultancy & services in their respective fields of specialization.
