Department of Biotechnology



Carved out of the then composite School of Life Sciences, the Department of Biotechnology was established in 1993. Since then, the Department is actively involved in teaching, research, and consultancy. The vision of the Department is to expand knowledge in basic & applied Science and Engineering & Technology. The Mission is to pursue career pathway in relevant Technology fields. The Department offers academic programs viz. two year M.Sc., six year integrated M.Tech., M.Phil., Ph.D., advanced diploma in molecular diagnosis and five year integrated M.Sc. life sciences (Supportive). The academic programs are assisted by three Professors, one Associate Professor, three assistant professors and six guest lecturers. The department has attracted nearly 4.45 crores funding from various National and State funding agencies since its inception and 5.5 lakhs from consultancies. Apart from this, DBT has sanctioned 75 lakhs to conduct a one year Advanced Diploma course in Molecular Diagnostics (ADMD for five years). The Department is sanctioned with 10 lakhs in UGC Non SAP and the department is currently supported by UGC SAP with 64.75 lakhs. Bioactive potentials, Immunomodulators, Plant Biochemistry, Plant Eenetic Engineering and Molecular Biology, Immunodiagnostics, Microbial Biotechnology, Theoretical Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology Education and Science & Technology policy are the areas in which research is going on in the Department. It's a pleasure in stating that the Department has filed four patents so far. The Department has signed both national and international memorandum of understanding (MOUs) with various teaching and research institutions. Under academic activities the department has organized four International Conferences, four workshops, seven seminars and three training programs. Till date the department has produced about 51 Ph.D.'s, 140 M. Sc.'s and 52 M. Phil.'s and 36 PG Diploma students. Approximately 50% of our Ph.D.'s and 20 % of our M. Sc.'s are pursuing careers abroad. The faculties have published 213 research papers and 17 books to their credit. Currently the Department has a strength of 44 M. Sc's, 35 Ph. D's and 12 M. Phil's. The faculty offers consultancy & services in their respective fields of specialization.
