National Centre for Alternatives to Animal Experiments (NCAAE) Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, India


The NCAAE research team consists of project fellows, technical assistants and lab technician. This research team is working in a coordinated manner towards establishing diverse in-vitro and in-silico methods on alternatives to animal experiments. The newly appointed project fellows and technical assistants are being extensively trained to enable them to achieve this.

Three Dimensional (3D) Cell Culture

Currently, the center focuses on designing and developing novel co-culture based method, 3D culture as alternative models against use of animals in toxicity testing. Another new idea is to establish 3D co-culture of adipocytes with another cell type to serve as a model to understand pathways related to metabolic disorders involving these cell types. Use of adipocyte as a co-culture model is a completely new area of alternative research.

Small Model Organism for Aquatic Toxicity Testing

Other than animal cell culture, NCAAE is trying to establish small model organism for aquatic toxicity testing. His research interests are toxicology with special reference to nanomaterials and small model organisms. We are currently working with hydra, a small model organism which does not feel pain and stress. We have adopted hydra to test the toxicity of few nanoparticles and emerging pollutants such as BPA. We also train students in culturing, handling and maintaining of hydra.

Construction of model system for Alzheimer's disease

We are currently developing 3D neuronal stem cell culture transfected with lentiviral clones to analyze the expression of Aβ and NFT pathology in lentiviral transfected neuronal stem cell 3D culture. Further the neuroprotective effect will be analysed using Myrtenol on lentiviral transfected neuronal stem cell 3D culture.
