Centre for Nehru Studies Chair

Bharathidasan University is one among the six centers in the country and the first in Tamil Nadu (in July 2005) to receive grants from UGC for the establishment of the Centre for Nehru Studies during the X Plan Period. The Centre for Nehru Studies started its activities from September, 2005 onwards. The Centre for Nehru studies has a well-equipped library with more than 350 books. The CNS library has a collection of articles, books, journals, web site information on Nehru. The Centre for Nehru studies has documents and exhibits photo, philately and video coverage related to Nehru.

The Centre for Nehru Studies is holding periodic seminars, conferences and lecture series in order to impart knowledge about Nehru's ideology and contribution as a "Maker of Modern India". Moreover, focus is given to the contemporary relevance of Nehru's ideas on India's foreign policy, scientific temper, egalitarian society and rapid modernization of India. Besides, the Centre disseminates among the younger generation the struggles and sacrifices of Nehru for India's Independence. Nehru envisioned a strong, secular, industrialized modern India with self-sufficient growth and scientific advancement.

Specific objectives of the Centre for Nehru Studies:

  •  To illustrate Nehru as a role model for the younger generation.
  •  To impart knowledge about Nehru's Ideology and contribution as a "Maker of Modern India".
  •  To disseminate among the younger generation the struggles and sacrifices of Nehru for India's Independence.
  •  To focus on the contemporary relevance of - Panch Sheel and Peaceful-Co-existence- the anchor sheet of India's Foreign Policy-the brain-child of Pandit Nehru.
  •  To inculcate Scientific temper in an egalitarian society and modernized India.
  •  To create a strong academic centre of teaching and learning Nehru's social and political philosophy.
  •  These ideals and values need reiteration, inculcation and adoption in contemporary times for a harmonious living in a strong and secular India.

Activities

The Centre for Nehru Studies is engaging itself in a series of activities which include conducting National Seminars, Jawaharlal Nehru Lecture Series and preparing documentation on Nehru by collecting books, Philately collection on Nehru, CDs, mimeographed precious papers from Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, Nehru Memorial Museum Library and other Libraries and archives in India and abroad.
The activities of the Centre for Nehru Studies can broadly be divided into the following major heads.

  •  Jawaharlal Nehru Lecture Series
  •  Conducting National Seminars
  •  Establishment of a Documentation Resource Centre for Nehruvian Studies

Research

The Centre for Nehru Studies has established a Documentation Centre. This Centre has documents with reference to the life and career of Jawaharlal Nehru and the Centre is collecting documents pertaining to Nehru's Philosophy and ideals from journals, newspapers, audio-video footages, photographs etc. The CNS is also maintaining a library having collection of articles, books, journals, web-site information on Nehru. The Centre for Nehru studies has documents and exhibits viz: photos, philately and video coverage related to Nehru.

  •  Centre for Nehru Studies working on Research Library and Data Bank on Nehru.
  •  Networking with other Centre for Nehru Studies in the country holding periodic workshops and conferences.
  •  Exhibition of Documents related to Nehru
  •  Organising popular Jawaharlal Nehru Lectures and National Seminars on Nehru and his ideology
  •  Initiating projects related to Nehru studies.
