Department of Mathematics


The Department of Mathematics started functioning in 1963 in the erstwhile Madras University Postgraduate Centre. Except for the initial period, the department has been offering M.Sc., M. Phil., and Ph.D. programmes. The department has a full-fledged computer lab for both teaching and research. More than four thousand reference books are available in the departmental library.

For the past five years there has been a tremendous development in the department that several outstanding mathematicians have visited the department and delivered lectures; a training programme for college teachers has been conducted for two years with the financial assistance from the DST to promote research; many students of the department have been absorbed as lecturers in some institution or other, a good number of research papers have been published in international journals; the Choice Based Credit System CBCS) has been introduced from the academic year 2002-2003 for M.Sc. Mathematics programme, with the syllabi based on NET/SLET; some of our students have participated in quiz programmes conducted outside the University and brought laurels to the department by winning various prizes.
