School of Physics

Department of Medical Physics

The department of Medical Physics under the umbrella of School of Physics offers M.Sc., Medical Physics programme specialized in Radiation technology applied to cancer therapy since 2006 in collaboration with GVN cancer Hospital, Tiruchirappalli. We receive incredible support from the Department of Physics to offer this course. M.Sc Medical Physics is inter-disciplinary course bridges physics with medicine and biology towards applications in health care particularly in radiation cancer therapy. Due to increased health care awareness in India, several hospitals install state of art of equipments for diagnostics and therapeutic treatment of cancer patients. There has been increasing demand for well-trained medical physicist and Radiation safety officers in our country. To address the shortage of skilled work force in these fastest growing areas of cancer radiation therapy, Bharathidasan University also engaged in training the young pool of PG students as qualified medical physicist and Radiation safety officers (RSO) to make cancer free nation.

Medical physics is one of the fastest growing areas of employment for physicists. They play crucial roles in radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation oncology. These fields use very sophisticated and expensive equipment, and medical physicists are responsible for much of its plan, execution, testing and quality assurance.

Our alumni's are working in several leading hospitals in India. Our M.Sc. Medical Physics course is recognized by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India.
