Department of Remote Sensing

The Department of Remote Sensing, functioning under the School of Earth Sciences, Bharathidasan University, has its genesis in the pioneering initiatives undertaken in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS. The rapid advancements in satellite-based Earth observation technologies and spatial data analysis, the University established the Centre for Remote Sensing in 1994 with the objective of promoting education, research, and applications in the Earth sciences. Over the years, the Centre evolved into an internationally recognized academic and research institution and was subsequently elevated to the status of the Department of Remote Sensing. The Department has been recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu as a Centre of Excellence in Remote Sensing and is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory and computational infrastructure.

The Department focuses on the integration of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, Geoinformatics, GNSS, Photogrammetry, LiDAR, Unmanned Aerial Systems, and Digital Image Processing with core geological and environmental sciences. This interdisciplinary approach facilitates comprehensive understanding of Earth surface processes, natural resources, environmental dynamics, and geohazards, while enabling spatial data–driven solutions to address societal and developmental challenges.

Academic activities of the Department are designed to balance strong theoretical foundations with extensive practical exposure, field-based learning, and application-oriented research. The curriculum is periodically updated to incorporate emerging geospatial technologies and evolving research trends, ensuring alignment with national priorities and global advancements in Remote Sensing and GIS.
